No Escaping the Major Question For World No.1 Lee Westwood

Filed under:

Lee Westwood, Masters Tournament, Augusta National Golf Club, April 10, 2011Unfortunately for Lee Westwood, annoying questions about the majors will only disappear once he has won one.

The Englishman, 38, may be on top of the rankings once again, following his victory at the Indonesian Masters, but the nagging questions about the year's four big tournaments refuse to go away.

Preparing for the Ballantine's Championship in South Korea, Westwood appeared annoyed about being quizzed on being named the world's best golfer without ever having won one of the stellar events.

"The amount of times I have to answer it gets on my nerves," Westwood told Reuters. "This might be the very last time I could be answering this question. It could be 'no comment' after this.

"The world rankings and major championships are two completely separate things."

The problem for Westwood is that on that basis he will be saying 'no comment' several times a week until he can go the distance in a major.

Last year he finished second in the Masters and the Open and also threatened to have a late run at this year's Masters only for his putting to let him down.

The US Open at Congressional may offer his best opportunity at finally breaking that duck this year, with solid and controlled play likely to win through.

But while no-one can claim that Westwood does not deserve to be at the top of the world rankings - he has won the rankings points, deal with it - neither can he complain about the constant grilling about his inability to do the business on the biggest stage.

It is something that all top sportsmen have had to get used to, from Chelsea's failings in the Champions League to Ivan Lendl's regular disappointments at Wimbledon.
