There's plenty at stake as Newcastle prepare to travel to Blackpool, especially for the hosts in their attempt to halt their freefall slide straight back towards the Championship. There was even more on the line when the sides met almost 60 years ago to the day, with no less than the FA Cup up for grabs. The trophy eventually ended up heading back to the north-east after a 19-year absence, as Jackie Milburn took centre stage with the kind of irrepressible display current Newcastle manager Alan Pardew would love to see from one of his strikers at Bloomfield Road to help them clinch Premier League safety.
As he would do two years later in the dramatic Wembley final victory with which he'll forever be synonymous, Stanley Matthews excelled. Only on this occasion, Newcastle enjoyed rather more luck than Bolton Wanderers would do as Matthews' fellow Blackpool forwards failed to take advantage of the sublime wing wizardry on show.
Stan Mortensen saw a header cleared off the line, while Jackie Mudie, the Scotland international, wasted a glorious opportunity carved out by the future footballing knight. The Seasiders were left to rue those missed opportunities as Milburn, Newcastle's talismanic equivalent to Matthews, scored twice in the five minutes before half time to seal a 2-0 victory.
It secured the fourth of the Tyneside club's six FA Cup final victories, the subsequent triumphs arriving 12 months hence and in 1955, when Milburn scored the final's then quickest-ever goal, finding the net after just 45 seconds in the 3-1 victory over Manchester City.
His first in 1951 came as a pass from the incomparable George Robledo beat the offside trap to release the record-breaking forward to tuck the ball home past goalkeeper George Farm, another of the Tangerines' long-serving Scots, from just inside the area.
