Ipswich 1 Norwich 5: Canaries Storm Back Into Second Via a Derby Double

Gareth McAuley of Ipswich Town battles with Simeon Jackson of Norwich City Norwich inflicted a crushing defeat on neighbours Ipswich to reclaim second place in the Championship table.

Town had been beaten 4-1 at Carrow Road in November when Roy Keane was manager but had been looking much more solid under Paul Jewell, his successor.

But Norwich ruined that impression with a ruthless display to leapfrog over Cardiff City into the automatic places.

Norwich had created a few chances even before Andrew Surman put them ahead in the 13th minute, with Wes Hoolahan having seen a strong shout for a penalty turned down early on.

Hoolahan was the provider when the breakthrough came, with his fierce drive from an angle on the left proving too hot for Arran Lee-Barrett, Ipswich's inexperienced goalkeeper, to handle and the loose ball fell invitingly for Surman to despatch.

Ipswich enjoyed a spell of pressure for a while after that but fell further behind in the 24th minute in a most unfortunate manner.

David Fox swung in a corner from the left and Gareth McAuley, who had perhaps been fortunate with the penalty decision, saw his luck desert him when the ball hot him and flew in his own net.

Ipswich saw a free-kick from Jimmy Bullard almost give them an instant comeback but the first half ended with Lee-Barrett achieving partial redemption with a save to deny Grant Holt, who had intercepted Damien Delaney's back header.

Simeon Jackson poked home a Holt cross to make it 3-0 before Bullard pulled one back via a perfectly-struck effort from outside the box that gave John Ruddy, the Norwich goalkeeper, no chance.

But any hopes Ipswich harboured of a late comeback were dashed when Russell Martin, the right-back stormed into the box to make it 4-1 and the Ipswich backline was torn apart in stoppage time when Dani Pacheco, on loan from Liverpool, had the easy task of finding the net after Jackson's shot had hit the bar.
