Martin Olsson scored the only goal as Blackburn calmed their relegation fears with a first win in three months.Victory was imperative for Steve Kean's side, with the visit of Bolton being followed by a trip to West Ham, a home game against Manchester United and a trip to Wolves on the final day.
The importance of the game was reflected in Blackburn's blistering start, with Olsson pulling David Wheater, playing out of position at right back, all over the place.
The young Swede laid on a decent opening for Benjani and also went close with a powerful effort
from just outside the area.
Owen Coyle had opted to use a host of fringe players at Ewood Park and the visitors' best chance came when Matt Taylor's free kick was headed on by Michel Salgado and Rodrigo stabbed a shot against the post.
But the hosts took the lead when Salgado picked out Olsson and he surged into space before drilling a shot into the bottom corner.
Olsson had another effort saved by Adam Bogdan shortly afterwards and after the break, Brett Emerton went close with a curling free kick.
Salgado went off on a stretcher in the closing stages and Steven Nzonzi just missed with a header as Bolton extended their miserable away record to 10 defeats in 11 games.
