Miami Round-up: Victoria Azarenka Piles More Misery on Maria Sharapova

Filed under:

Victoria AzarenkaFormer world No. 1 Maria Sharapova suffered more Miami misery after being handsomely beaten 6-1 6-4 by Victoria Azarenka in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open.

The Belarusian world No. 8 claimed a 6-1 6-4 triumph as she was crowned queen of Key Biscayne for the second time in three years, while Sharapova was left to reflect on her third final defeat at the tournament.

It was a sixth WTA title for 21-year-old Azarenka, who will climb to sixth when the new world rankings are published on Monday.

One small crumb of comfort for Sharapova, meanwhile, will be the fact she will rise to ninth in the standings despite the fact she is still searching for her first trophy since May last year.

The Russian paid the price for an appalling start to the contest after being broken in each of her first six service games as Azarenka wrapped up the first set with ease.

Former Wimbledon champion Sharapova made just as bad a start to the second set, gifting Azarenka another break with a double fault, yet after fighting back to 4-3 she lost her serve again with another double fault and her opponent took full advantage, serving out for the match and title in one hour and 46 minutes.
