First and second round leader Rory McIlroy, who had started this tournament in such blistering fashion, saw his momentum slow at the start of his third round.
Maybe it was the pressure of leading the Masters that disrupted the young Northern Irishman's flow.
However, the 21-year-old showed maturity beyond his years and played some excellent golf on his way to a steady 70 that kept him in top spot.
Only a series of unlucky putts stopped him from pulling further away from the chasing field but he ended with a four shot advantage on 12 under for the tournament.
