Serena Williams has already been left sidelined by a setback suffered while out dining at a restaurant and now Kim Clijsters has joined women's tennis' list of freak injury victims after injuring her ankle at a wedding.Exact details of how the injury occurred remain unclear but the Australian Open champion has been rated as a major doubt to compete in next month's French Open.
The Belgian had been taking a break to recover from shoulder and wrist problems, yet she must now contend with even more serious damage to her right ankle.
A statement on her website read: "At the wedding party of her cousin Tim, Kim injured her ankle severely. The consequences are rather dire. After a visit to the doctor, the diagnosis is a severe strain of both the medial and lateral ligaments of the right ankle and torn ligaments, a torn capsule of the ankle joint, a hematoma and torn tendon sheath.
"Kim's ankle is now completely immobilised and she cannot use her foot for a few days. Kim faces a recovery of at least four to six weeks. Since the French Open starts in literally six weeks, Kim's presence in Paris is very uncertain. In the meantime Kim has to continue working on her recovery from a shoulder and wrist injury."
