Video: Introducing the Japanese Game of Botaoshi, or Pole Pull-Down

BotaoshiOn the fringes of what most would call sport, there is Botaoshi, which as far as we've been able to ascertain is a Japanese game. The source for the rest of this piece is the internet, so readers beware.

Apparently the objective is for a team to defend their pole for two (some say three) minutes. If the pole tips 30 degrees or more for three seconds the defending team loses (some suggest that it was once 45 degrees but this proved to be too much of an advantage for the defending team and the sport's administrators implemented the change to make their game more attractive to spectators or the attacking team).

Deuce of Davenport says:
"The game seems to have been first played in 1954-55. The pole doesn't have to hit the ground completely. It only had to go down 45 degrees until 1973 when the rules were changed to force teams to drop it to a 30 degree angle. One can only assume the losing team has to commit seppuku in front of the spectators. There is no honor in losing. Forgiveness please!"

The point or origin of the game is hazy though Off The Bench offers this take:
"Because you never know when another country will invade and ruthlessly try to topple your telephone poles, the Japanese military has invented a sport called Bo-Taoshi for its cadets".

FanHouse UK research also suggests that in Botaoshi the referee's decision is final.
