No More Mr Nice Guy at Chelsea? How About Mr Even Nicer Guy?

So goodbye then Carlo Ancelotti, last season's history-making Double winner and this season's trophyless fall guy. You were too much of a nice guy to get the better of Sir Alex Ferguson for too long and Roman Abramovich, like most Bond villains, does not tolerate failure in an employee.

The Italian can expect a generous pay-off and a job back home (rather than a trap door into shark-infested borsch) should he be disposed of at the end of the season, which appears to be the most expected outcome following Sunday's conformation that Manchester United are indeed still better than Chelsea.

It will put Chelsea is a rather familiar position of course as there has been little stability at Stamford Bridge since Jose Mourinho was jettisoned in 2007. Incredibly as it now seems, the avuncular Avram Grant came the closest of all the Abramovich appointments of landing the trophy the Russian really wants, the Champions League.

So if nice guys can't hack it in the west end then what are Chelsea doing trying to tempt the nicest nice guy of them all back to the club? Gianfranco Zola, out of work since being shabbily treated by West Ham's owners at the end of last term (and who have long been regretting hiring the aforementioned Mr Grant in his stead) has been offered the chance to fill the gap left earlier in this season by Ray Wilkins.

Another nice guy who, having been unceremoniously booted out as Ancelotti's number two at at time when there were very fee problems at all on the pitch, also knows how it feels to have his career blighted through no real fault of his own.
