Madrid Open: Roger Federer Bids to End Rafael Nadal's 'Amazing' Run

Filed under:

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will meet in a mouthwatering semi-final tussle at the Madrid Open after claiming contrasting victories in the Spanish capital.

World No. 1 and home favourite Nadal cruised to a 6-2 6-2 triumph over France's Michael Llodra to make it 36 successive on clay, while third seed Federer edged out Robin Soderling 7-6 6-4.

It will hand the Swiss 16-time Grand Slam champion to exact revenge over the Spaniard, who defeated him in last year's final of the tournament.

Novak Djokovic will meet Andy Murray's conqueror Thomaz Bellucci in the other semi-final after continuing his unbeaten start to 2011.

The Serb ousted David Ferrer 6-4 4-6 6-3 to make it 30 victories out of 30 in 2011 - surpassing the total of 29 managed by Ivan Lendl in 1986.

It put Djokovic third in the all-time list with Bjorn Borg's total of 33 in 1980 and John McEnroe's of 42 in 1984 the only better streaks.

Bellucci claimed another scalp at the 1000 series event with a 7-6 (2) 6-3 triumph over seventh seed Tomas Berdych.
