Kevin Phillips and Birmingham Out to Avoid an Unwanted Piece of History

Kevin Phillips scorig for Birmingham against BoltonBirmingham have already made history this season after winning their first trophy in 48 years but now they are facing up to the very real possibility of doing so for all the wrong reasons.

No Premier League team has ever won a cup and consequently gone on to be relegated but that is precisely the scenario Alex McLeish's team are facing up to heading into Sunday's final round of fixtures.

Having been beaten by Fulham last weekend, they are now level on points with Blackpool and Wigan Athletic, just one goal better off than Ian Holloway's 18th-placed team, who occupy the final spot in the bottom three. Nail-bitten fingers and squeaky bums are guaranteed.

Only one team has ever lifted a cup and gone on to drop out of the top flight the same year, Norwich in 1985, and McLeish will be desperate to avoid his team becoming the second.

Before their Wembley triumph he made it clear the Premier League was their bread and butter - the lucrative nature of the competition means it simply has to be.

First and foremost, relegation would detract from that wonderfully-spirited performance, where underdogs Blues claimed a fairytale victory from Arsenal.

"Of course it will," said striker Kevin Phillips. "Our bread and butter is the Premier League. It's not just for the club, it's for every individual, for their careers.
