British No. 1 Andy Murray booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters after overpowering home favourite Potito Starace in straight sets. The fourth seed proved too strong for world No. 44 Starace as he claimed a 6-2 6-3 triumph to set up a date with world No. 28 Florian Mayer, who beat Juan Ignacio Chela 7-5 6-4.
But the big shock of the day was an early exit for third seed Roger Federer, who lost 4-6 7-6 (2) 7-6 (4) to France's Richard Gasquet.
As for Murray, the opening five games went with serve until the Scot struck in the sixth, breaking with a exquisite shot from the right corner which the Italian was unable to return.
He duly consolidated the break before beating Starace on his own serve again when he brilliantly read a Starace smash and managed to divert his return shot beyond the Italian to clinch the set, Starace regained his composure for the start of the second set and it went with serve until game eight when Murray punished a series of unforced errors from his opponent to break before holding his nerve to serve out for the match.
Elsewhere, world No. 1 Rafael Nadal cruised into the last eight at the expense of Feliciano Lopez with a 6-4 6-2 victory.
