Defensive Frailties Leave Wolves With Mountain to Climb to Avoid Relegation

Mick McCarthyMick McCarthy might have claimed to the contrary in his post-match interviews, however Wolverhampton's draw against Birmingham on Sunday demonstrated exactly why the Molineux men look destined for the drop this term.

Defensively, the campaign has been blighted by a series of blunders - think Ronald Zubar's last-gasp shocker against Bolton to set up Daniel Sturridge for the winner - and Michael Mancienne's poor header to allow Seb Larsson to equalise was the latest.

Going forward, they have fared no better, scoring less goals than any other team on their Premier League travels this term (13) - and once again that was evident as they failed to find a way past a Birmingham side reduced to 10 men for over an hour of the game.

Without their two leading scorers, Kevin Doyle and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake their attack looks distinctly Championship in terms of class while, creatively, they have relied far too heavily on the excellent Matt Jarvis for much of the campaign.

A defiant McCarthy insisted it could prove to be a good point for his team.

"It's another point away from home that we'd have all taken setting off down the road," he said. "It's never been an easy place to come and play and we've hardly been playing free-flowing football and been brilliant over the last four games.

"Maybe this has stopped the rot because it was full of energy and hard work. Birmingham is never an easy place to come and it's a local derby. We've got to make use of this point by winning our home games.
