Cesc Fabregas Should Let His Head Rule His Heart and Move to Madrid

Cesc FabregasHow odd it would be to see Cesc Fabregas in the white shirt of Real Madrid...

It's not difficult to imagine the Arsenal captain in a Barcelona kit as he had one draped over him last summer by his national team colleagues after Spain won the World Cup.

It always seemed a matter of time before Arsenal would eventually cave in and let him rejoin the club he left as a teenager but at the moment it is looking increasingly unlikely the Catalans will match the Gunners' £35 million asking price.

Real, however, might do just that.

According to The Sun, Real president Florentino Perez - who is less than impressed with Jose Mourinho adding just one trophy to Madrid's lengthy list - is determined to get the better of bitter rivals Barca off the pitch.

The Champions League winners in 2009, who beat Madrid in this season's semi-finals to set up a Wembley rematch with Manchester United, already possess midfielders of the highest calibre and Fabregas has always known he would not be guaranteed a place in the starting line-up at the Nou Camp so long as Xavi and Andres Iniesta remain fit.

At Real however, Fabregas could slot in alongside ex-Liverpool favourite Xabi Alonso and improve the Madrid side significantly.

The rumours are that, in the wake of yet another trophy-less season, Arsenal will allow Fabregas to depart and their ideal scenario would be a lengthy summer bidding war between the two powerhouses of Spanish football.

Yet as much as Fabregas would love to return to his boyhood club and link up with fellow Academy graduates Gerard Pique and Leo Messi, Barcelona have already made it clear the £35 million fee the Gunners demand exceeds their current financial capabilities

And crucially Fabregas has never ruled out a move to Madrid despite making his affections for Barca perfectly clear. The Arsenal captain is at the stage of his career when he badly needs to move to a bigger, more successful club - and though you can't get any bigger or more successful than Barca right now it actually makes more sense to move to Real.

Surely his head tells him this is so, even if his heart belongs elsewhere?
