Bolton's Marcos Alonso Could Face Court Following Fatal Car Crash

Marcos Alonso, Bolton Wanderers, August 6, 2010Bolton Wanderers defender Marcos Alonso has been confirmed as the driver of a car involved in a collision in which a 22-year-old woman has died.

The 20-year-old, who has made nine appearances for Bolton this season since signing from Real Madrid last summer for £2.2million, is alleged to have driven a BMW into a wall in Madrid on Monday morning and a female passenger in the vehicle suffered head injuries.

She died within 30 minutes of the incident.

Reports from the BBC indicate that a fellow female passenger is also seriously injured while Alonso's brother Miguel broke three ribs and former Real Madrid team-mate Jaime Navarro broke his collarbone.

There are also allegations Alonso failed a breathalyser test although no details have been released by Spanish police.

A statement from the Superior de Justicia de Madrid said: "Preliminary investigating court No4 in Madrid yesterday released footballer Marcos Alonso Mendoza, who is suspected of having committed an alleged crime against road safety, driving while over the alcohol limit, a crime of negligent homicide and causing of reckless injury.

"In addition, the judge has imposed precautionary measures to withdraw his driving licence and impose a driving ban throughout the national territory for the duration of the instruction process."

The night before his arrest, Alonso posted on his Twitter account that he was out with Navarro after flying back to Spain following Bolton's 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at the weekend.

He wrote: "Out with @jaimenvr for a drink and enjoying a couple of days off with the family. What a great player Jaimito is!"

He is expected in court on Tuesday when a judge will decide if he should be held responsible for the collision.

If so, under Spanish law, he could face trial accused of involuntary manslaughter.
