When the International Cricket Council announced that the 2011 Cricket World Cup would take an astonishing seven weeks to complete, observers inside and outside the game of cricket criticised the length of the tournament and the toll it would take on those involved. They were proved right in one respect because it went on for far too long, yet the sub-continent still hosted a near two-month exhibition of cricketing skills and talent that deserves to be remembered as the most successful and enjoyable tournament for some time, perhaps ever.
That is why the ICC's decision to go through with their threat to trim down the number of nations who will compete in the next instalment in 2015 is so baffling, unjust and plain wrong.
Only ten countries will take place in the next World Cup, with each position reserved for the Full member (ie. Test playing) nations, which means Associate member countries such as Ireland and Netherlands will miss out.
Zimbabwe, however, have been given a spot on the basis that they play Tests matches - despite not having played one since 2005 because of domestic troubles. Madness.
How on earth is cricket going to keep progressing and growing around the world if countries are denied the right to compete in the World Cup?
