QPR 3 Sheffield United 0: Routledge Double Takes Rangers Nine Points Clear

Adel Taarabt, QPR v Sheffield United, Championship, Loftus road London, April 4, 2011Wayne Routledge scored twice at Loftus Road as QPR edged closer to promotion from the Championship.

Alejandro Faurlin scored the other goal as manager Neil Warnock secured victory against his former club, who are deep in relegation trouble.

Adel Taarabt returned to the QPR team after missing their last game through a family bereavement, and he set up early chances that Faurlin and Clint Hill were off target with.

Darius Henderson returned from suspension and had the first chance for the visitors, sending a powerful volley dipping over the crossbar.

But hopes of Micky Adams' team inflicting a shock result were dented just before the half-hour mark when Routledge broke the deadlock.

Faurlin's ball over the top allowed Heidar Helguson to get a cross over from the right flank, and Routledge volley low into the corner of the net for his third goal since his loan from Newcastle.

The second goal came seven minutes after the break when Faurlin smashed his drive into the corner of the net after the visitors failed to clear a corner.

Routledge added the third in the 66th minute when he finished well from the edge of the area.

REACTION
QPR manager Neil Warnock does not like seeing his old team struggle but is only concentrating on his own side:
"It's sad to see the situation they're in, it's a fantastic club, but can't dwell too long on that, its dog eat dog at this level."

On promotion:

"You just keep going," he said. "I'm too old in the tooth for that. Other teams do the talking and we do it on the pitch. I don't think we've got those type of lads, you look at the spine and there is no-one getting carried away."

Sheffield United manager Micky Adams is targeting two wins from their next two games to give this team a chance to survive.
"If I give up then what chance have we got? We are reliant on other teams slipping up but we have to concentrate on what we can affect.

"That starts with Middlesbrough on Saturday. If we get three points there then we have another home game. We need six points from those two games."

On their defending:
"We were outdone by a good side and their front men but we have a soft underbelly, particularly away from home. We don't do the right things at the right times and you can't do that here. We're a soft touch away from home."

WHAT IT MEANS:

QPR now need three wins to secure automatic promotion, while Sheffield United are still seven points from safety.
