No Easy Life for Brad Friedel Whose Move to Spurs Shows Ambitious Streak

Brad Friedel faces new teammate Rafael van der VaartBrad Friedel will have just turned 42 when his new contract at Tottenham runs out. But, if he maintains the form he shown in the last three year at Aston Villa, Friedel will still be the first-choice goalkeeper when that date arrives.

The American veteran has signed a two-year deal at White Hart Lane in a move that illustrates his ambition - and that of Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.

Friedel can only be applauded for moving to a top-five team. It would have been easy for him to rejoin Liverpool and sit on the bench, piling up a healthy pension while doing very little. That is simply not in his nature.

Instead, it is likely he will in action for for Spurs when the new season starts, facing two years when the aim will be to finish in the top four and then play in the Champions League.

Redknapp has managed to alter Spurs' transfer policy since his arrival in 2008, as they used to target younger players with resale value.

So it was shock when former Arsenal skipper William Gallas, 33, arrived on a free transfer but Redknapp's decision was vindicated through the course of the season.

Redknapp is clearly not building for the future, not looking for the equivalent of Gareth Bale for the 2015 season. He is working for immediate success and Friedel illustrates that as the former Blackburn goalkeeper has been one of the most consistent performers in recent campaigns.
