We used to know him simply as Joey, but from now on we'll surely have to call him Nostradamus Barton. There were plenty fearing the worst when he became the latest Newcastle convert to Twitter, and with apparently good reason. However, few could have predicted just how good the midfielder would be at foreseeing the future, namely his own, when just days into his Twitter career, he belatedly gave his reaction to not being offered a new contract.
He said: "I can't sign a contract if am not offered one. Can't blame Mike (Ashley) and Derek (Llambias) can you? Slight problem is, they don't want to spend any money or pay any wages. It's genius really, ha, ha. Basically they want a younger, better, cheaper player."
Step forward, with almost perfect timing, Yohan Cabaye, the midfielder who newly-crowned French Champions Lille confirmed will be moving to St James' Park later this summer after Newcastle triggered a £4.3 million release clause in his contract.
Barely before Barton's Tweet had hit cyberspace, Cabaye, a player who seems to fit the bill perfectly according to Joey's wise words, is heading for Tyneside, in all probability as a long-term replacement for the Scouser.
Younger? Yes, he's three years the junior of Barton. Better? A twice-capped France international with more to come in the next couple of weeks, in addition to having helped Lille to the French domestic double this term for the first time in 65 years.
That's a decent CV in anyone's book, although of course, the jury must remain out as to whether he can hack it in the Premier League, but there's every indication it's a test he will be up to. Watch this space.
