WRU Can Expect More Criticism After Failure to Pursue Gavin Quinnell Case

Gavin Quinnell, Worcester v Ospreys, EDF Energy Cup, Sixways Stadium, Worcester, October 27, 2007The Llanelli Scarlets have followed the Quinnell family in blasting the Welsh Rugby Union for their decision to drop a citing complaint over an incident that led to Gavin Quinnell losing the sight of one eye.

In an unexpected move, the WRU have backed down and ruled that there is no case to answer, despite the career of the back-row forward being prematurely ended.

Quinnell, part of the famous Quinnell rugby dynasty that includes brother Scott and father Derek, was hospitalised following the incident in a clash with Cross Keys last October.

The 26-year-old was forced to cut short his career after doctors were unable to save his eye and he continues to receive medical treatment.

However, the WRU disciplinary panel hearing threw out the case following a review of the evidence.

That followed an investigation by Gwent Police who arrested the Cross Keys player and passed the case to the Crown Prosecution Service who advised against charges being brought.

The Scarlets issued a statement on behalf of the Quinnell family, expressing their dismay at the governing body's lenient verdict.
It read: "We are all astonished and deeply shocked by the decision that has been reached.

"Naturally, Gavin and his family are devastated by this stark verdict and have requested that they are given some time and space to let a very disappointing outcome sink in.

"The fact is everyone involved in this case is currently so numb that we are not in a position to make any further comment at all at this stage; neither are we able to consider fully what course of action to take next.

"The family wish to express their thanks again to all those who have shown them great support throughout this very challenging and difficult time."

Quinnell returned to his hometown club on a two-year deal last summer after four years away - following spells with Worcester and Italian outfit Viadana.

The news of Quinnell's misfortune at the time sent an shockwave through rugby and the Quinnells spoke of their collective distress at the news that his loss of vision would be permanent.

The west Wales based Scarlets are believed to have offered Quinnell a coaching role at the club.

Yet now no further action will be taken after an incident that led to one of three rugby-playing brothers hang up his boots - and put rugby thuggery back in the dock in the process - won't sit well with rugby followers.
