Rangers manager Walter Smith can only be consoled by the knowledge that the coming week can hardly be worse than the last, with the outlook appearing to be as bleak on the pitch as off it.The Craig Whyte takeover rumbles on at the same speed as a steamroller - Ibrox fans want him to put up or go away - and Rangers were beaten 3-2 at home by Dundee United on the day after chairman Alastair Johnston questioned the future direction of the club.
With the Lloyd's banking group taking a tighter grip on the club's finances, Whyte's proposed injection of cash has never been so desperately needed.
And just to underline that, Whyte only needed to take a glance at Smith's bench on Saturday.
With a stretched Rangers' side hauled back to 2-2 with 12 minutes left on the clock, Smith did not feel that any of an unfit Jamie Ness, Kyle Hutton, John Fleck or Salim Kerkar -- four of the five outfield substitutes he was able to name -- would have the necessary impact.
