Regardless of his place in the pecking order post-Sheffield, FanHouse is nailing its colours to the mast to predict the Jester from Leicester will be the one laughing after 17 days of Crucible competition. And that's no joke.
He's come close of course, as beaten finalist to John Higgins four years ago, and despite two Masters final wins, his critics will suggest the major stumbling block to fulfilling his potential this year is the way he seems to have developed something of a mental block when it comes to getting over the line in tournaments.
Just one victory - the Welsh Open in 2008 - in five ranking finals would appear to back that up. Maybe it does, but the mere fact that he's been there to contest those finals, and to a more regular degree in recent times, has to be his credit.
Add in that two of those finals have been this year, including most recently a 10-8 China Open defeat to Judd Trump - and the 27-year-old is undoubtedly in the kind of form to go deep into the draw at Sheffield this time.
Selby is a player who thrives over the 'long-course' events such as the World Championship, and a favourable early draw should help him ease into the tournament before tougher tasks further down the line.
