Just four days after the Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor declared that black managers in English football needed to be specially nurtured, Paul Ince has lost his job at League One Notts County. The former Manchester United and England midfielder had lasted just five months at Meadow Lane and his departure brought the total of black managers at the 92 league clubs down to precisely one.
Of course, County can point to the league table as justification for their decision: the Magpies are only two places above the relegation places and Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Oldham Athletic was their fifth successive reverse.
"It was with a heavy heart that the board called a meeting in the aftermath of our defeat by Oldham," explained Notts chairman Ray Trew. "The recent run of results, which saw us win just once in March, meant that we were all in agreement that we had to address the situation."
The decision comes as a further blow to a managerial career that started promisingly at tiny Macclesfield, blossomed at MK Dons but stalled at Blackburn, where his time as the Premier League's only black manager lasted 21 games, and then failed to revive significantly at MK Dons once again and then County.
