Much-maligned and never far from controversy in his career, Lee Bowyer has found himself in the unfamiliar position of making headlines for the right reasons this week. The 34-year-old midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and has been told by Blues they have no plans to offer him a fresh deal -but they will be making a mistake if they allow Bowyer to walk away for free in the summer.
The former Leeds, Newcastle and West Ham star gave a timely reminder he still has something to offer with a brilliant box-to-box display in Sunday's thrilling 2-1 final win over Arsenal at Wembley as Blues lifted their first major trophy for 48 years.
The performance was proof Bowyer still has the legs for top-level football and his experience was a vital factor in the shock victory after he was preferred to eventual matchwinner Obafemi Martins from the start as manager Alex McLeish opted for a 4-5-1 midfield to stifle the Gunners.

In fact, Bowyer took just a matter of minutes to make an impact on proceedings after being denied a stonewall penalty for a foul on him by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after a poor offside call by the referee's assistant.
He said: "It wasn't a bad display for 34, was it? I feel good. People, because of your age, question whether you can still get box to box, if you can still do what you used to.
"But I showed I obviously can. My deal is done in the summer here at Birmingham. At the moment the club have said an extension isn't going to happen, so I will be looking elsewhere. But I wanted to stay."
