He has done nothing to diminish his reputation as a strict disciplinarian during his time at Aston Villa and now Gerard Houllier appears to have taken his boldest move yet.Just two weeks after defenders James Collins and Richard Dunne were at the centre of an alcohol-fuelled bust-up with backroom staff during what was supposed to be a team-building break, the Daily Mail reports under-pressure Houllier has altered parts of Villa's PFA-approved rulebook, including banning the use of mobile phones in the dressing room.
The newspaper claims at least two of members of the dressing room are seeking advice before agreeing to the changes.
A club spokesman said: "These were alterations to the standard rule-book that the manager wanted to make. It is not a new code of conduct. These amendments have been presented to the players."
It is certainly a risky move from Houllier, who was a target for abuse from supporters, before, during and after Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Wolves - a result which left them just a point clear of the Premier League's bottom three.
The 63-year-old, who has won just six of Villa's 25 league games since his arrival, has been handed a vote of confidence by chief executive Paul Faulkner and there is no question that sacking him now would be a mistake at such a late stage in the season.
