After the controversy of returning John Terry to the England captaincy, Fabio Capello had one more surprise in store when he called up Wolves winger Matt Jarvis to the squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales.In truth, the recognition for Jarvis, 24, is not all that surprising given his form in a struggling team this season and the fact he has been linked with a call-up previously this term.
He has even been named in provisional squads without making the final cut to date although injuries to Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson have clearly helped his cause.
Andy Carroll is one of three players who come into the squad after missing England's last outing, last month's friendly in Denmark.
It is his first inclusion in an England squad since his £35 million move to Liverpool from Newcastle and offers an intriguing option for Capello as he aims to find an effective partner for Wayne Rooney.
Everton defender Phil Jagielka and Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon are the other two players to come into the squad from the group that played in Copenhagen.
And with England also having a friendly with Ghana next midweek, the second part of the international double header, it is safe to assume most - if not all - of the 26 players will be involved to some degree.
Carroll, for one, can surely expect to add to his first cap, collected against France in November.
