Burnley and Preston Must Regret Not Sacking Their Managers Earlier

Eddie HoweNewcastle United's dismissal of Chris Hughton earlier this season and the equally ruthless sacking of Sam Allardyce from Blackburn Rovers strengthened the widespread belief that football clubs are too trigger happy when it comes to ditching their managers.

The consensus is that nobody is given enough time to dig sides out of trouble, but Burnley's victory at Preston on Saturday in an excellent Lancashire derby offered a completely new perspective.

The match featured two teams who still have work to do to achieve their aims at either end of the table, mainly because their respective chairmen acted too slowly in sacking their previous managers.

Darren Ferguson was sacked by Preston at the end of December while Brian Laws went at the same time from Turf Moor - and results since then have proved both clubs should have acted sooner.

Laws was never popular at Burnley, despite being a former player, and when he took over from Owen Coyle just 12 months before his dismissal, the feeling that their Premier League future was doomed turned out to be prophetically correct.

He took them down back to the Championship and they limped along in the earlier parts of this term.
