BoxingScene.com's Rick Reeno, first reported the cancellation, citing promoter, Frank Warren, who was sponsoring the bout with Klitschko's K2 Promotions. ESPN's Dan Rafael then sourced Klitschko's manager, Bernd Boente, regarding the details of the injury.
Klitscho apparently suffered the injury during a workout with trainer Manny Steward, according to Boente.
"He was hitting the mitts and it just happened. The fight is canceled," said Boente. "The pain is extreme. He couldn't even sit in the car on the way to the hospital."
Boente told ESPN.com about Klitschko, who had worked out earlier in the day before members of the public, but after a second one, he was in pain. A CAT scan revealed a two inch tear on the left side of Klitschko's abdominal muscle near the base of his rib cage.
"The doctor said he needs four to six weeks to heal. Wladimir has never had to cancel a fight before. He is totally upset. He had a great training camp in the Austrian mountains," said Boente.
"He was in fantastic shape and he's very, very upset and very sad," said Boente. "And not only for him, but for all the people who bought tickets to the sold-out arena. We were all looking forward to the fight. We are sorry for the fans and for our TV partners. What can you do?"
Boente said he was not sure if the fight with Chisora (14-0, 9 KOs) would be rescheduled.
"We don't know. This just happened," Boente said. "We have to check all the options."
