Dave Doeren Named NIU Coach, Non-AQ Coaching Carousel Spinning

Dave DoerenIt didn't take long for Northern Illinois to fill its coaching vacancy.

Just a week after coach Jerry Kill formally accepted the head coaching position at Minnesota, the Huskies announced that they were taking a member of the Big Ten coaching world for their own.

Wisconsin defensive coordinator Dave Doeren was introduced as Northern Illinois' newest coach, marking the second coaching announcement at a non-automatic qualifying school this week.

Louisiana-Lafayette hired Mississippi State assistant coach Mark Hudspeth earlier in the day.

"I am extremely proud to be a part of the Huskie family," Doeren said in a statement released by the school. "To have the opportunity to work at a program that Coach Novak and Coach Kill have built, and continue building toward excellence, is a dream come true. This is something that I've thought about for the last 16 years, I can't wait to get started."

Hudspeth will begin his duties at Louisiana-Lafayette immediately while Doeren will stay on to coach the Badgers against TCU in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. Doeren staying on with Wisconsin will hamper some of NIU's ability to recruit. According to Rivals.com, NIU only has four known commitments for the 2011 season. Linebackers coach Tom Matukewicz is currently serving as NIU's interim head coach and will lead the Huskies in the Humanitarian Bowl against Fresno State.
