Rickie Fowler Gives Himself the Chance of Ending Long Wait For Victory

Filed under:

Rickie FowlerWhen Rory McIlroy was disintegrating at Augusta, those searching for some positive context could point towards Rickie Fowler for consolation but could the Bridgestone Invitational be the stage for the great American hope to finally break his duck?

As McIlroy slumped on his driver as he unravelled on the way down the stretch on the Sunday at the Masters, Fowler was on his way to finishing in a share of 38th, six over par for the weekend.

A few months older than the Northern Irishman, who has subsequently gone on to win the US Open, Fowler, 22, is still without a win as a professional.

No-one that saw his putting display at the Ryder Cup can be in any doubt about the American's potential but he has yet to deliver.

Yet taking a share of the lead into the weekend in Akron, on eight under par with Adam Scott, Ryan Moore and Keegan Bradley, Fowler knows what he has to do to convert his current position into something tangible.

"For the most part, I just need to focus on my game and focus on playing well," Fowler said. "It's not something you can put in the back of your head.

"I won in junior and amateur golf, but it's a well-known fact and not exactly something you can put to the side that I haven't won yet as a pro. For the most part, I'm going to be focusing on my game.

"Obviously I have been playing well lately and have been in contention, so if I put myself in contention after tomorrow going into Sunday, it'll be familiar territory from the last month, and we'll be ready to go play.

"If I hit some fairways, it definitely gives me, putting irons in my hands and get the ball on the green, my putter has been good, so take it from there. The focus is going to be on playing well and let the other things fall into place."
