Thomas Bjorn Wins At Gleneagles After Marathon Five-Way Play-Off

Filed under:

Thomas BjornThomas Bjorn fought off George Coetzee to win the Johnnie Walker Championship on the 77th hole after a five-way play-off at Gleneagles.

Bjorn topped the leaderboard after a final day 69, while South African Coetzee muscled his way into contention with a round of five under.

The Dane must have thought he had won it on the fourth play-off hole with an approach shot to about four feet, only for Coetzee to produce a 12-foot birdie putt and they headed back to the 18th tee for a fifth time.

But after more than six and a half hours on the course, Bjorn birdied the fifth play-off hole, after Coetzee could only make par, to earn his second win of the season and his 12th European Tour victory.

Bjorn turned 40 in February and used all of his experience to come out on top.

He told Sky Sports: "I had to dig pretty deep in the end. When you set out on a play-off, five guys, you almost are a little bit too relaxed because it takes a lot for it to go your way.

"But was we got rid of them one at a time it also became very hard. The way I played the last
play-off holes, I can't be more proud.

"You get quite good at it if you play the same hole again and again. This is my second win this year and I'm thrilled with that.

"Things are going in the right direction and when I get under the cosh, I feel pretty comfortable and pretty good.

"My consistency needs to be better to get in the top tournaments. Hopefully there's a few more to come."
