Andy Murray was too strong for Gilles Simon as he sealed his place in the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters with a straight sets success.The world No. 4 claimed a 6-3 6-3 victory over the Frenchman to set up a last four showdown at the Western & Southern Open with either Rafael Nadal or Mardy Fish on Saturday.
A 20-minute delay due to a fire alarm in the players' area failed to distract Murray from his task and he broke in the very first game of the match only to allow Simon to break back immediately in a contest dominated by baseline rallies.
Overall, it suited Murray, however, and his superior class eventually told with one further break enough for him to edge the first set.
A break in game six courtesy of a deft drop shot his opponent was unable to return handed him the initiative in the second and the Scot duly served out for the match to oontinue his promising US Open preparations in Ohio.
Roger Federer meets Tomas Berdych and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils go to head to head in the other two last-eight matches.
