How Positive Thinking Will Give Darren Barker a Chance in Tough Title Bout

Filed under:

On October 1, Darren Barker steps through the ropes to face WBC middleweight king Sergio Martinez in the famous Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and despite being a massive underdog, the Barnet man is brimming with confidence.

And rightly so. There's no point denying the fact that Barker is up against it when he faces the Argentine who has 47 wins under his belt and more knockout victories than the Barnet fighter has bouts.

Regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters, Barker is facing one of the best in the business and will have to put in a performance beyond anything we've seen from the undefeated 29-year-old in his previous 23 fights.

Martinez is a powerful force in boxing at the moment but, like any fighter, he has weaknesses and Barker is adamant he can expose them. And it is that confidence that will give him a chance on the biggest night of his boxing career.

There's little point in Barker hopping on the plane and crossing the Atlantic for this bout if he is thinking that he hasn't got it in his locker to beat the 36-year-old Martinez and, by the way the Barnet man is speaking, it is quite clear he does believe he can cause a shock.
