It seems Newcastle manager Alan Pardew spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson about more than how to handle Twitter-using players when the pair had a heart-to-heart last week - because Newcastle have signed Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan on a five-year contract. The deal ends Obertan's two-year spell at Old Trafford, where he made just 28 appearances, scoring one goal.
Pardew said: "He has great pace and excellent technique and he has improved his power in the last 12 months."
Obertan, 22, added: "I really needed a club where I could play more games. I know it won't be easy to play each game here, because there's a good group, but I want a fresh start in my football."
Blackburn sign midfielder Petrovic
Blackburn Rovers have confirmed they have signed Serbian midfielder Radosav Petrovic from Partizan Belgrade on a four-year contract. He arrives on an undisclosed fee and becomes manager Steve Kean's second signing following David Goodwillie.
Petrovic, 22, has 19 Serbia caps and was named in his domestic league's team of the year for the last two seasons.
Meanwhile Rovers midfielder Keith Andrews has joined Championship side Ipswich on a six-month loan deal.
Black Cats sign McClean
Sunderland have signed Irish midfielder James McClean from his hometown club Derry City. The 22-year-old left winger has agreed a three-year deal.
McClean becomes manager Steve Bruce's tenth signing and he regards his new man, who arrives on a £350,000 deal, as one for the future.
Bruce said: "James is an outstanding young talent and has rightly attracted interest from a number of clubs over the summer so we're very pleased that he sees his future at Sunderland. I'm delighted with what we've been able to do over the summer.
"We've the makings of a very good squad and James will now have every chance to come here and make that next step in his career."
Pienaar out for six weeks
Tottenham midfielder Stephen Pienaar has been ruled out for six weeks after having surgery on a groin problem.
Pienaar had to come off in the first half of Spurs' pre-season friendly win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday and had surgery on Tuesday morning.
The South African international joined from Everton in January and has since made 11 appearances for the north London side.
