Time to Ask Questions About Andrew Strauss's Captaincy in One-day Format

Andrew Strauss cannot be criticised for the way he has been batting at the World Cup so far - but his captaincy of the ODI side is on the line.

Yes, he will have looked at replays of his dismissal against Ireland and wonder whether he should have attempted the flashy shot which led to his downfall.

But, apart from that, he is up among the top run makers in the tournament after his 88 against the Netherlands and his brilliant century against India.

Strauss has also played his part in making sure that his new opening partnership with Kevin Pietersen has been a productive one.

It would be even more productive if Pietersen would control his rampaging ego. His ridiculous reverse sweep when well set against Ireland to make his first ODI century for 25 games - far too long for an international batsman of his obvious class - played a key role in the damaging defeat.

The sight of Strauss scratching his head in the field against Associate member teams like Ireland and the Netherlands is also worrying for team director Andy Flower.

Strauss cannot be blamed for the failings of his frontline bowlers, especially James Anderson, who has taken only two wickets and conceded a fifth of the 959 runs taken off the England attack in their three group games.

And the captain cannot carry the can either for the inexplicable way the side's fielding has melted in the sub-continent heat.
