It was different story when they faced each other in another cup competition 39 years ago as four meetings were spread out over seven hours and nearly two months.
Their League Cup semi-final games began in late 1971, continued into 1972 and featured just about everything you could ask for in a cup-tie.
There were goals, great saves (including, remarkably, one by England captain Bobby Moore), controversies, penalty dramas....no wonder older fans of both teams regularly name these among their most memorable games whenever they are polled.
The cup saga started in relatively routine fashion, though, with a marvellous goal from Clyde Best helping West Ham to a 2-1 win in the first leg of the semi-final at Stoke's old Victoria Ground and seemingly heading for the Wembley final. Peter Dobing had put Stoke ahead before Geoff Hurst levelled with a penalty.
Stoke took a 1-0 lead through John Ritchie in the second leg at Upton Park, but a misunderstanding between goalkeeper Gordon Banks and Mike Pejic ended with Banks having to foul Harry Redknapp and concede a penalty that was taken by Hurst.
