But, finally, there could be a chink of light and Kightly will soon have the chance to remind Wolves that he remains one of Mick McCarthy's shrewdest signings.
The 25-year-old is in shock contention to make his return, after patella tendon inflammation, in the West Midlands derby with Aston Villa on March 19.
Kightly was a key player in McCarthy's Championship promotion campaign but his burning desire to prove himself in the top flight was prematurely halted early last season.
He had made only nine appearances that season but is now on course to help McCarthy in his bid to secure Premier League survival.
He said: "To be out for such a long space of time affects you mentally and physically and I struggled to deal with it at times.
"I don't really feel I've given the Premier League a real crack so to play a part this season would be massive for me. I'm keen to get back and help the club stay in the division.
"Hopefully I can continue training as I've been training and get some more minutes under my belt in the reserves and be back within the first team for Wolves."
After being out so long, it is easy to forget the impact Kightly made at Molineux. Signed for a measly £50,000 from non-league Grays Athletic, his form in the Championship was so impressive that the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Aston Villa regularly sent scouts to watch him.
Wolves will have to be patient as he steps up his return in the senior team but Kightly will be desperate to hit the ground running. He will face severe competition, with Matt Jarvis now on the fringes of the England squad while £4 million signing Stephen Hunt and the impressive Adam Hammill will also be jostling for places on the flanks.
