Sir Alex Ferguson's gamble to rest a number of his big name players ahead of Tuesday's Champions League meeting with Marseille paid off as his patched-up side maintained their hopes of completing a treble.
For Wenger, though, there was only disappointment as, a fortnight after the Carling Cup final defeat to Birmingham City and four days after being humbled by Barcelona in the Champions League, the FA Cup was also erased from their trophy wish-list.
Arsenal's focus will now turn towards the Premier League where they will hope to end their six-year wait for silverware by overhauling United in the title race. If they are to do that, they will have to discover a more telling cutting edge as Wenger's side once again paid a heavy price for failing to convert a number of clear chances although the performance of United keeper Edwin van der Sar contributed significantly to the visitors' clean sheet.
Ferguson sprang a major surprise when he named a midfield of Fabio and Rafael Da Silva, Darron Gibson and John O'Shea.
Yet while it took the makeshift home line-up a while to settle, the Da Silva twins combined effectively on the break, particularly in the build-up to the 28th minute opening goal when Fabio finished after Manuel Almunia parried Javier Hernandez's header.

Arsenal had a great chance to level immediately after the break when van der Sar saved from Laurent Koscielny but United responded immediately with another sharp break that concluded with Rooney heading his sixth goal in his last eight starts.
Both sides had good opportunities to score during the remainder of the second period but Arsenal were unable to find the finish that would have increased the pressure on ferguson's team during the later stages of the game.
