Indian Wells Round-Up: Djokovic Betters Federer to Reach Final and No. 2 Spot

Filed under:

Novak DjokovicNovak Djokovic set up a mouthwatering meeting with Rafael Nadal in Sunday's BNP Paribas Open final after he overcame a second-set wobble to beat Roger Federer and leapfrog the Swiss into second in the world rankings.

The Serbian recorded a 6-3 3-6 6-2 win over 16-time Grand Slam champion Federer in the last four at Indian Wells to take his record for 2011 to 17-0. It was the third time in three attempts he has defeated the Swiss this year.

A break of serve in game five proved sufficient for Djokovic to take the first set in 44 minutes but Federer fought back to force what proved to be a scintillating deciding set.

Federer was broken at the start only to break to love for 2-2, but he double-faulted at break point in the following game and Djokovic gained full control with a double break before serving out for the match.

The third seed now faces his toughest test yet, however, with world No. 1 Nadal lying in wait after he bounced back from a poor start to defeat Juan Martin Del Potro 6-4 6-4 in the opening semi-final match of the day.

The Spaniard spurned a break point in game one and was broken in the following game but, after slipping to 4-1 behind, reeled off five straight games to clinch the set.

Argentinian Del Potro had won the pair's last three matches but Nadal ended that record, breaking in the fifth game before serving out for victory.
