Bryan Robson, Thailand, Doha, February 25, 2010Bryan Robson, the former England and Manchester United captain, has undergone surgery for throat cancer. The 54-year-old, who is currently coaching the Thailand national team, was in Bangkok when he had the operation on March 3.

Robson won 90 caps in more than a decade with England, in addition to racking-up 600 appearances in an illustrious 18-year playing career launched with West Bromwich Albion in 1974.

That included 13 seasons at Old Trafford, where he helped clinch the first Premier League title in 1993, and a club spokesman revealed: "Bryan underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his throat.

"The laboratory report revealed a cancerous tumour, which will need further treatment. The oncologist is confident the condition is treatable."
