Tiger Woods Leads the Big Names Who Miss the Cut at the USPGA

Tiger Woods and caddie Bryon Bell look on from the ninth fairway during the second round of the 93rd PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club on August 12, 2011 in Johns Creek, Georgia. Tiger Woods's demise continues at an alarming rate after he failed to make the cut at the USPGA Championship in Georgia.

The former world No. 1 played like an amateur as he made a catalogue of errors such as hitting successive bunkers before chipping into the water. He also hooked a straightforward second shot into the trees in an embarrassing display.

Woods, who went into this tournament with lofty expectations, eventually signed for a second round of 73 to finish on 10-over-par and looking for an early flight back to Florida.

Woods made bogeys at the fifth and seventh holes before back-to-back birdies at eight and nine suggested he was beginning to find his form.

Yet an awful double bunker shot at the 11th followed before he found the water on his way to a double bogey six.

Things got even worse when he rushed his drive at the 12th and ended up 75 yards from his preferred landing spot. His second blow was even worse as he made a woeful hook to leave him with a triple bogey seven.

It all raises serious questions about whether Woods will ever be able to regain the sort of form that won him 14 majors. On this evidence you have to say it looks unlikely.

Open Champion Darren Clarke extended his disappointing run of form following his success at Sandwich with a second round of 76 that resulted in him also missing the cut.

The Northern Irishman's two round total of 154 left him on 14-over for the tournament and resulted in him heading for the airport to catch an earlier flight.

It was another poor performance from Clarke, who missed the cut at the Irish Open and was down in tied 68th place at the Bridgestone Invitational last week.

Clarke cut a dejected figure and admitted afterwards that he was planning to take a break from competing for a short while.

After his round he said: "I'm just going away. I will not pick up the clubs for ten days. I won't even look at them. I'm just mentally tired and I need to have a rest."
