West Brom have completed the capture of Reading striker Shane Long in what is thought to be a record-breaking transfer for the Midlands club. The 24-year-old has signed a three-year deal at The Hawthorns with the option of a further year. The exact fee is undisclosed, however reports suggest the deal is worth in the region of £6.5million.
Long will play for the Republic of Ireland in their match against Croatia on Wednesday night before joining up with his new team mates.
And he is likely to make his debut in Sunday's Premier League opener against champions Manchester United.
Head coach Roy Hodgson told the club's official website: "Shane is one of the most talented young strikers outside of the Premier League and I'm delighted to welcome him to the club. He is a goalscorer and a hard-working player who has a very good attitude to the game.
"The great thing about him is that even though he is still only 24, he has six years' worth of experience of Premier League, Championship and international football and has margin for improvement in his game.
"We now hope to see him fulfil that potential over the next few years at West Bromwich Albion. Many other clubs have shown an interest in Shane and it is great that we have managed to acquire his services. With the signing of Shane, our squad is looking close to being complete."
Long scored 53 goals for the Berkshire club and Royals chairman Sir John Madejski said the striker went with their best wishes.
