Much was made of Rory McIlroy's claims that he would never alter his game for The Open but the fall-out from the July tournament has continued with the Northern Irishman citing that week as a factor in his decision to return to the PGA Tour next year.McIlroy is set for his first appearance in the United States since winning the US Open at Congressional in June when he tees it up at the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone.
But as well as the return of Tiger Woods hogging the headlines, McIlroy made waves with his announcement that he plans to play more regularly in the US next year.
The Northern Irishman raised eyebrows when he insisted he did not have to adapt his style when he finished tied for 25th at Sandwich.
One criticism that is regularly aired about McIlroy, 22, is that when the conditions are anything other than perfect, he struggles.
Even during his post-Sandwich interview he admitted he was looking forward to playing in better weather and that his only links victories had been in benign conditions.
But while he is content to wait for a year when the conditions at The Open Championship suit him, the youngster is now set to turn his attentions back to the United States, where he thinks he can thrive.
It may be a blow to the European Tour but it is hard to see why that should worry McIlroy, who has experienced much-publicised changes in his private life in recent weeks, too much if he thinks he will be better served in the United States.
"I've spoken to a couple of the guys from the PGA TOUR about it, and I'm leaning towards taking my card up again definitely," McIlroy, who played the PGA Tour in 2010, said. "I feel as if I play my best golf over here. I'm very comfortable in this country.
"You know, I'm going to look at a few houses down in Florida after the PGA. Yeah, I'm definitely looking towards coming back and playing a full schedule over here.
