Shay Given marked his Aston Villa debut with a excellent save to deny Bobby Zamora and ensure Alex McLeish avoided defeat in his first game since his controversial appointment as Villa manager this summer.Given's save was one of only a handful of highlights in a drab game that provided an anti-climatic start to the new Premier League season at Craven Cottage.
After a difficult summer when he has been forced to oversee the departure of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, McLeish was at least relieved to see his side get off the mark.
Fulham manager Martin Jol was left feeling frustrated as his side failed to click into gear despite having already played six competitive games in the Europa League.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
41 mins: Andy Johnson cuts in from the left hand flank and fires a right-foot shot that was tipped to safety by Shay Given.
46 mins: Johnson flicks on Aaron Hughes' throw in towards Bobby Zamora who shoots from six yards out but is denied by an excellent reaction save from Given.
64 mins: Danny Murphy's diagonal ball picked out Zamora but the striker is once again denied by Shay Given.
78 mins: Marc Albrighton's corner is met by Richard Dunne but the defender's header is deflected away by Philippe Senderos. Not a great chance, but as good as it got as both sides run out of ideas.
