David Howell has a share of the lead with Simon Dyson and Richard Green going into the final day of the Irish Open after a stunning round of 64 took him to 11 under for the tournament.Englishman Howell, 36, has struggled with a succession of injuries since a blistering 2006 took him into the top 10 in the world.
He has only finished in the top 10 once this year, at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, but he put together and impressive burst of form in Killarney.
Howell had picked up two shots on the front nine but picked up five birdies in six holes to take the club house lead and set up what could be one of the most remarkable stories of the year.
He told Sky Sports: "I've been working on a couple of different things since last week and I finished with an 83 in Sweden. Things were just getting a bit simpler for me and it's positive.
"I was delighted to make the cut, not that that was my goal, but I felt that there was a low one in there and sure enough it came in the nicest of circumstances.
"I've won a handful of tournaments over the years and a couple of fairly big ones. When I've had a
chance I've been able to hang in there and play well.
"I played the best golf I have in an awful long time so that shows that I can still do it."
Even Howell will admit that there is still much to be done before he can consider a first victory in five years and Dyson and Green have both had impressive weeks so far.
Scot Stephen Gallacher is two shots back on nine under, while Ross Fisher, Soren Hansen and Marcel Seim are three shots off the lead.
