Phillips Idowu insists his world title defence remains on track despite being forced to pull out of the UK Championships. The British triple jump star disappointed thousands of fans at the Birmingham meet - which also doubled as the trials for the rapidly approaching games South Korea - by deciding not to compete after revealing his recent training schedule had left him drained and unable to do himself justice.
"I've had a tough couple of weeks," the 32-year-old London 2012 gold-medal hope admitted. He added: "I've trained really hard and I feel I've taken a slight downward spiral."
As reigning champion, Idowu is guaranteed automatic qualification for up-coming worlds in Daegu, where his hopes of earning back-to-back titles following his success in Berlin two years ago have been boosted by the absence of injured French rival Teddy Tamgho.
The Londoner told the BBC: "I didn't want to put in a performance that was below par. I'm not at my best right now as we're starting to wind things up in preparation for Daegu.
"You know when your body is not completely right. I jumped last year with an illness and barely got over 17 metres."
