Graeme McDowell Emerging From His Slump to Mount Players' Challenge

Filed under:

After struggling to recapture his form of the final weeks of last year, Graeme McDowell is coming good again as the Players Championship starts to get serious.

From his US Open victory to his glorious performance at the Ryder Cup, the Northern Irishman leaped into prominence.

Then he finished the season with a stunning victory over Tiger Woods at the Chevron World Challenge.

Lee Westwood may have reached number one by that point but there was little doubting where the real force in the world game was coming from.

Yet as the year clicked around to 2011, McDowell, 31, picked up three top 10 finishes but went quiet and he claims that two weeks ago he was playing like a 15-handicapper.

There was an 80 in his opening round at Bayhill, where he failed to make the cut, before he also went home on Friday at the Masters and at New Orleans.

But he claims that working with his coach Pete Cowan has helped restore his natural draw and his rhythm has returned.

And he goes into the weekend at Sawgrass right in contention after shooting 67 and 69 to leave him two shots off leader David Toms.

"To be honest, I probably backed into most of my good results this last year, with a low one last round in Hawaii, decent run last round in Abu Dhabi, and I backed into it at the Honda Classic as well," McDowell said.
