France Win the Right to Stage the 2018 Ryder Cup but is it the Right Decision?

Filed under:

Europe Ryder Cup player Luke Donald (Front L) putts on the 3rd green as he plays against US Ryder Cup player Jim Furyk in the Session 4 Singles games on the final day of the 2010 Ryder Cup golf competition between US and Europe at Celtic Manor golf course in Newport, Wales on October 4, 2010.After months of speculation, we now know France will host the 2018 Ryder Cup, but now the decision has been announced, there is an overwhelming sense of disappointment.

Firstly, let's make it clear, there is nothing wrong with the French bid to host the tournament at Le Golf National just outside Paris.

The course was specifically built for this event in 1990 and has staged the French Open for a number of years where is has been widely received as an excellent track.

The Albatros course is also ideally suited to spectators, as there are some steep banks that will provide good vantage points.

Furthermore, in terms of its location, it is close to Paris, which in itself will provide an added incentive for spectators to snap up tickets and make, perhaps a full week visit out of the tournament.

World No.1 Lee Westwood was quick to send his congratulations to the winning bidders and tweeted: "Well done France on getting the Ryder cup in 2018."
