Shinya Aoki Submits Rich Clementi; Imanari, Tokoro Advance in Dream Bantamweight GP

TOKYO, Japan -- DREAM lightweight champion Shinya Aoki was essentially perfect at DREAM Fight for Japan at Saitama Super Arena on Sunday night, dominating UFC veteran Rich Clementi for twelve minutes before slapping on a face lock from back control for an easy submission victory in DREAM's first event of 2011.

Also on the card for the leading Japanese promoter's return to action, Masakazu Imanari and Hideo Tokoro booked their tickets to the final of the Bantamweight Japan Grand Prix, although Tokoro's route to the final was definitely not without controversy, advancing through to the semifinals by an sickening blow to the groin of Yoshiro Maeda.

Full results below.

Shinya Aoki dominates Rich Clementi

As one would expect, Shinya Aoki wanted late replacement Rich Clementi on the mat in their non-title lightweight affair and without too much resistance, that is exactly what Aoki got. Within seconds of the opening bell, the DREAM lightweight ace closed the distance and secured the clinch leading into a single leg takedown into half guard. Clementi's attempts to escape from the bottom position or mount some offense only gave Aoki the space he needed to advance his position and after a failed kimura attempt from the American, Aoki had Clementi in back control.

With Clementi perhaps over-concerned about the possibility of a rear naked choke, Aoki was free to punch without fear of his opponent escaping and the DREAM ace landed what seemed like at least one hundred unanswered blows over the course of approximately four minutes. Clementi made no attempt to escape or offer more defense than simply shelling up, but was clearly telling referee Yuji Shimada not to stop the bout and advising his corner that Aoki "punches like a girl."

In a highly questionable decision, Shimada stood up the bout and yellow carded Clementi despite Aoki continuing to rain in fists from back control while the American made no attempt at all to escape or even move.

Round two was more of the same for Aoki as he again got the takedown with ease and found himself in back control. This time though, realizing that the referee wasn't going to stop the bout regardless of how many punches he landed, Aoki sought the submission more aggressively and was quickly rewarded with his second consecutive face lock submission victory.

Katsunori Kikuno employs new, although questionable style in victory over Daisuke Nakamura
At Katsunori Kikuno's open training session in the lead up to DREAM Fight for Japan, the karate stylist demonstrated a new style of striking that employed no guard and largely consisted of pressing forward with straight punches from the hip while taking unprotected punches to the face. Many in the press had taken Kikuno's demonstration as a simple nod to his traditional roots, but surprisingly this was the style he used in his decision victory over armbar king Daisuke Nakamura.

Kikuno gave no respect to Nakamura's punching power, freely taking punches to the face in order to throw his own. The change of style was also so radical that we did not see Kikuno's trademark hourglass stance or body kick, a blow that has brought him up the top echelon of the Japanese lightweight rankings in recent years. With Nakamura's chin proving solid and the Kiyoshi Tamura student scoring well on the feet, Kikuno resorted to takedowns and ground and pound for the majority of the latter half of the fight and comfortably earned the decision, despite his confusing tactics.

Caol Uno's experience leads him to victory over "Wicky" Akiyo Nishiura
15-year veteran, Caol Uno was on the verge of retirement before his bout with artist/slugger "Wicky" Akiyo Nishiura, but a masterful game plan convinced the former Shooto champ and two-time UFC title contender that perhaps is not the time to hang up the gloves.

Uno, lacking the strength to out-wrestle his much younger foe, drew Nishiura into scrambles from feigned takedowns and from there, was time and time again able to secure the back and came close to earning the rear naked choke submission victory. Nishiura, who consistently proves incredibly difficult to submit, was never able to land his wild uppercuts and hooks and so Uno easily earned the judges favor.

"Lion" Takeshi Inoue TKO's Deep Champion Koichiro Matsumoto

In what was billed as a battle of the regional promotions, former Shooto ace "Lion" Takeshi Inoue blitzed fellow striker and Deep champion Koichiro Matusmoto with a straight right, following it up with hammer fists to get his first DREAM victory and the win for Shooto.

Before the right hand, Matsumoto seemed to be taking the lead, moving much better around the ring from the outside and scoring better with his hands, but one punch from "Lion" was all it took to send his opponent crumbling to the canvas. Matsumoto was vocally protesting the stoppage post-fight, but given that he was curled up in the fetal position and making no attempt to move, the stoppage was good.

Joachim Hansen derails Mitsuhiro Ishida
Former DREAM lightweight champion Joachim Hansen has not been overly impressive at featherweight, seemingly lacking power and often running out of gas early in a bout, but his victory over Mitsuhiro Ishida showed that he still can perform at this weight class, even if it is not ideal for him.

In a roll reversal, Ishida, who had been undefeated as a featherweight going into the bout, was surprisingly the better of the two on the feet, running circles around Hansen and dropping him with a straight left hand. Hansen was good enough to recover though and in another strange roll reversal actually landed a suplex on the wrestler among several takedowns he scored.

Despite his cardio failing him in the late in the bout, an armbar attempt from Hansen proved to be better than Ishida's striking and his own takedowns and the judges rendered a split decision in the Norwegian's favor.

Imanari and Tokoro move to finals of Bantamweight Japan Grand Prix

Hideo Tokoro's path to the bantamweight GP finals was controversial as he essentially won one bout by head butt and groin strike.

The highly entertaining grappler was superb in his defeat of Atsushi Yamamoto as he out-boxed and out grappled the Norifumi "KID" Yamamoto team-mate in their rematch, earning a split decision despite taking significant damage in his quarter-final fight.

In that quarterfinal bout, Yoshiro Maeda and Tokoro put on a wild haymaker fiesta, throwing defense out the window and swinging for fences, prompting Maeda to scream in enjoyment and pain. This incredible display was brought to an end though when Tokoro inadvertently delivered a head butt followed later by a sickening groin punch that badly crippled Maeda. Rather than having the bout declared a no-contest and having the judges decide the victor, Maeda continued fighting despite not being able to stand properly and his corner threw in the towel.

Deep bantamweight champion Masakazu Imanari's path to the GP final was more clear cut but was certainly less exciting.

In his quarterfinal bout, Imanari outpointed reigning ZST champ Keisuke Fujiwara in a frustrating match where Fujiwara was intent on defending but offered very inconsistent offense.

In the semifinal match between Imanari and WEC veteran Kenji Osawa though, the Deep champion showed why he is dubbed the "10th Degree in Footlocks" submitting Osawa with a heel hook in the second round to advance to the tournament finals.

Injury Fears Surface Again After Paula Radcliffe Struggles in London 10k

Paula Radcliffe has already suffered doubts over whether she will be fit to take part in what would be the perfect swansong to her marvellous career in next year's Olympic Games, doubts that will be more intense than ever after her miserable return to action in the Bupa London 10,000m.

Finishing third on her comeback after an 18-month absence is not necessarily the most dreadful result she could have feared since all athletes take time to get back up to speed after such a long spell out of action.

But the fact that Radcliffe finished almost a minute behind winner Jo Pavey as she tried to ease her way back into competitive racing, after the birth of her second child and a succession of injuries, clearly indicates there is more work to be done.

Issues run deeper than the stopwatch against which she has raced for so long. Physically she is hurting and will be 38 when the Olympic marathon comes around next year.

More crucially there is the mental battle she faces to haul herself back into shape and the fact she was so distraught in the immediate aftermath of her return offered a worrying insight into her frame of mind.

Describing the return as "a bit of a disaster" was an understandable reaction. The fact she was so low, equally so.

UFC 130 Morning After: Rampage vs. Hamill, a Dud of a Main Event

Filed under:

Rampage JacksonA few months ago, when UFC 130 was first scheduled, it looked like a hell of a fight card: Frankie Edgar would take on Gray Maynard in the rematch of their epic lightweight title fight, and Rampage Jackson would take on Thiago Silva in what promised to be a thrilling, hard-hitting co-main event.

What we actually got at UFC 130 was a lot different: Edgar and Maynard both dropped out of the event with injuries, Silva got busted for cheating on a drug test, and we were left with Rampage vs. Matt Hamill as a main event.

What else can be said but that the main event turned into a dud?

Rampage vs. Hamill looked like a bad fight on paper, and it turned out to be a bad fight in the Octagon: Hamill is a swell guy whom UFC fans will always like and respect, but he's just not in the same class as Rampage. It was a one-sided beatdown from start to finish, and a disappointing main event. The first Edgar vs. Maynard fight was the UFC's best main event so far this year. Rampage vs. Hamill was the worst.

And as bad as losing the Edgar-Maynard fight was, losing Silva from what had been scheduled as a co-main event fight with Rampage was big, too. A Silva-Rampage fight would have been guaranteed fireworks. It's not just that Hamill isn't as good as Silva, it's also that he has a very different fighting style than Silva, and a Rampage-Hamill fight is just not as compelling as Rampage-Silva would have been.

And, of course, when you lose a main event, all the other fights have to move up a spot on the card. So when Rampage-Silva as the co-main turned into Rampage-Hamill as the main event, that bumped Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson into the co-main event spot. So while Edgar-Maynard and Rampage-Silva would have been awesome main and co-main events, what fans got instead were lousy main and co-main events, Rampage-Hamill and Mir-Nelson.

The first three fights on the pay-per-view card were all entertaining, so it's not like the fans who bought the pay-per-view didn't get any value for their money. But they didn't get the value they were hoping for. This was a fight card that once looked great, and instead turned into a disappointment.

Notes from UFC 130
-- According to CompuStrike, Tim Boetsch was successful on nine of 11 takedown attempts against Kendall Grove. Boetsch has always had good striking power, and if he's able to be that effective with takendowns now that he has moved down from light heavyweight to middleweight, he's going to be a force at 185 pounds.

-- Stefan Struve is 5-3 in his UFC career, and at just 23 years old, he has a lot of promise. But I have to say, I'm worried about his future if he doesn't get better at striking defense. All three of his UFC losses have been by first-round knockout: To Junior Dos Santos, to Roy Nelson and now, on Saturday, to Travis Browne.

-- The UFC has started showing fighters' Twitter handles under their names on its on-screen graphics. At a time when other major sports leagues are terrified that athletes will use social media to say something embarrassing, this was yet another indication that the UFC is way ahead of the pack on that front.

Quotes from UFC 130
"You just moved up the ladder here tonight, kid. It's a big, big victory for you. From here on it's nothing but top contenders." -- Joe Rogan to Rick Story. He's right. Story has a big future ahead of him in the welterweight division.

"How many times did I hit him in the face? What's up with that guy's chin?" -- Frank Mir after battering Roy Nelson for 15 minutes. In Nelson's last two fights he has been in the cage for six rounds with Mir and Junior dos Santos, and although he was beaten badly both times, he certainly does have a great chin, as neither man was able to knock Nelson out.

Good call
"This seems to be the difference between a real, true, legitimate heavyweight and a guy who's fighting at heavyweight because he likes food." -- Rogan on Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson. Rogan was right: Nelson won't be a great fighter until he's willing to take his diet and conditioning seriously, as a professional athlete should.

Bad call
When Jackson and Hamill backed away from each other with about 90 seconds to go in the main event, Mike Goldberg said, "A little respect from both men," as if they were backing away because they like each other. In reality, they were backing away because they were fatigued, and the fans were justified in their booing.

Stock up
Herb Dean showed once again that he's the best referee in the business because he thinks of everything. When the timekeeper gave the 10-second warning at the end of the rounds of the main event, Dean held up 10 fingers to show the deaf Hamill that there were 10 seconds left. Contrast Dean's work with the athletic commission official who interrupted Hamill's corner after the first round of the fight and didn't seem to realize that Hamill is deaf and needed a sign language interpreter.

Stock Down
Thiago Alves is never going to compete at a high level again if he doesn't figure out how to stop a takedown. His loss to Story was the third time in Alves's last four fights that a superior wrestler has been able to control him and win a decision, and as great a striker as Alves is, it's clear that other fighters realize that there's a giant hole in Alves's game.

Final thought
Given the light heavyweight landscape right now and the timing of Jon Jones' return from a hand injury, Rampage Jackson is probably the best choice available to get the next light heavyweight title shot, if Rampage himself is healthy. But as dominant as Jackson was against Hamill, he didn't do anything to indicate he'd have much of a chance of getting the light heavyweight belt back. Rampage can sleepwalk his way through a victory against an opponent like Hamill, but he'd need to fight at a much higher level to have a prayer against Jones.

Jack Wilshere Looks Increasingly Mature as He States the Case For Youth

Jack Wilshere, England, Ghana, Wembley, march 29, 2011The battle for Jack Wilshere's services this summer left no one feeling particularly satisfied.

On paper, the player's omission from Stuart Pearce's England squad at the European under-21 Championships in Denmark is a clear victory for Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal midfielder's club manager.

Wenger, though, is wise enough to understand the torment his 19-year-old player will have felt at making himself unavailable for his country at a time of life when Wilshere probably feels indestructible.

It was an agonising choice and one that came about as a direct consequence of the youngster's outstanding ability and rapid progress this season.
Over the course of nine months he has established himself as an essential component of a side competing in the Champions League and, incredibly after just one competitive start, already appears to be a feature of Fabio Capello's senior squad.

Something had to give and in this case it was Pearce's under-21 squad, rather than the player's overworked body.

Longer term, there will inevitably be concern about how the teenager handles his status.

Many prodigious young talents have faltered for any number of different reasons but in Wilshere's case, there appears to be no cause for concern. He already looks like mature beyond his years .

Wilshere has not only outgrown the Under-21s, he looks like captaincy material at Arsenal if Cesc Fabregas is granted a move away from the club and as an advocate for encouraging Capello to fasttrack more of his peers into the senior set-up, he makes an intriguing case, particularly when he states the claims of Chelsea's Josh McEachran.

In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, he said: "Josh McEachran is a great player. I hope next year he can break into the England team, like I did this year. If there is one holding, and me and him there. He's still young, so am I, but that would be a good midfield for England.

"There are players like Ashley Young, and Theo Walcott at Arsenal. He's maturing really well. People say he didn't really find the final ball but this year he's been brilliant for us. He's popped up with some goals.

"There's Andy Carroll. There's Jack Rodwell, Adam Johnson, younger players like John Bostock who haven't really had their chance yet."

Confidence has never been a problem for Wilshere and it will do other players no harm to see him progress, encouraging the belief they might soon follow although not all of the younger players are ready to leapfrog the under-21's.

Wilshere, though, looks at home in the seniors at the moment, and Capello's squad would look weaker without him.

Headache for Man United as Paul Scholes Brings an End to a Glorious Career

Paul Scholes after Champions League Final defeat to BarcelonaThere was an inevitability about Paul Scholes' decision to call time on his Manchester United career but that does not mean he will not be missed at Old Trafford next season.

With his 37th birthday fast approaching, he has decided to end his playing days and will take up a coaching role from the start of next season.

The former England international made just 14 Premier League starts last season, the fewest since his breakthrough campaign of 1994-95, and his decreasing importance to the team would have continued next term, particularly with Sir Alex Ferguson due to spend significantly in midfield.

Typically he announced his decision with understatement.

"I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do and to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United has been a real honour," he said.

"This was not a decision that I have taken lightly but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing. To have been part of the team that helped the club reach that 19th title is a great privilege.

"Most of all I would like to thank Sir Alex for being such a great manager, from the day I joined the club his door has always been open and I know this team will go on to win many more trophies under his leadership."

Scholes will also be given a testimonial next season and Ferguson feels the midfielder can now look forward to a successful career as a coach.

"What more can I say about Paul Scholes that I haven't said before?" Ferguson said. "We are going to miss a truly unbelievable player.

"Paul has always been fully committed to this club and I am delighted he will be joining the coaching staff from next season.

"Paul has always been inspirational to players of all ages and we know that will continue in his new role."

It is easy to see why Scholes had worries about how much he would feature next season, had he signed up for an 18th season as a first-teamer.

This season he has shown that he can still run games, sitting deep in front of the back four, flicking the ball from side to side and dictating the play.

After the transitional years of the former England midfielder no longer being able to make his late scoring runs into the box, Ferguson found a perfect role for the old schemer.

But Scholes does not seem to be the type that can really be talked into anything and, if his chances were limited this season with Ferguson set to spend on his midfield this summer, how many opportunities would he have seen next time around?

Ferguson surely attempted to appeal to the player's loyalty but, crucially, he would not have been able to tell Scholes he would start anywhere near half of United's games next season.

And that would never have been enough for Scholes, who can wander off into the sunset with 10 Premier League winners medals.

League Two Club By Club Review Part Two: Stevenage the Play-off Heroes

Stevenage celebrate their play-off winChesterfield were worthy champions, Bury, Wycombe and Stevenage were good enough to join them in League One next season but Lincoln were relegated, after Stockport had suffered a similar fate to end a 106-year association with the Football League.

Stevenage also marked their first season as a league club with a run in the FA Cup that saw them beat Premier League Newcastle 3-1 in front of their own fans, with Burton Albion beating Middlesbrough of the Championship in the third round as well.

M

Macclesfield Town
Finished:
15th
Highlight: Winning 4-1 at local rivals Stockport.
Lowlight: The death of midfielder Richard Butcher.
Star asset: Tyrone Barnett, plucked from Hednesford Town in the Zamaretto League, marked his first season with 13 goals.
The lowdown: Butcher's death meant it would inevitably a tough season for all at Moss Rose but manager Gary Simpson led them through it, although a habit of conceding late goals prevented them from rising higher.
Mark out of 10: 5

Morecambe
Finished:
20th
Highlight: Beating Shrewsbury home and away
Lowlight: Getting hammered 7-2 at Port Vale
Star asset: Goalkeeper Barry Roche is a big presence between the sticks.
The lowdown: The Sammy McIlroy era ended on a low note after five years and now Jim Bentley will try to keep the Shrimps up with virtually a whole new team having released nine first teamers and seen another retire.
Mark out of 10: 3

Northampton Town
Finished:
16th
Highlight: Knocking Liverpool out of the Carling Cup on penalties at Anfield
Lowlight: An 18-game win-less run
Star asset: Shaun Harrad contributed 19 goals to the cause.
The lowdown: Their final league position disguises the fact that the Cobblers were in real fear of dropping out of the Football League until very near the end and boss Gary Johnson has a major rebuilding job on his hands.
Mark out of 10: 3

Oxford United
Finished:
12th
Highlight: Thrashing League One Bristol Rovers 6-1 in the Carling Cup and then giving West Ham a game in the next round.
Lowlight: Losing 5-0 at Bradford and the next four games too.
Star asset: Striker James Constable, who signed a new deal last month.
The lowdown: A steady if unspectacular return to the Football League for the U's, who started poorly but improved after winning at Chesterfield at the end of November.
Mark out of five: 5

Port Vale
Finished:
11th
Highlight: Micky Adams' reappointment as manager.
Lowlight: The bust-up on the bus down to Aldershot between then-boss Jim Gannon and number two Geoff Horsfield that proved the promotion push was well and truly off the rails.
Star asset: Marc Richards netted 16 times for Vale.
The lowdown: Vale were vying for promotion when Adams left for Sheffield United in December. He is now back at the helm, having been fired by the Blades, but the season had gone spectacularly wrong in his absence.
Mark out of five: 4

Rotherham United
Finished:
9th
Highlight: Winning 6-0 at Lincoln
Lowlight: Not winning any of the next seven, which blew the play-offs
Star asset: Goal machine Adam Le Fondre, who will be in a higher division next term, possibly with Scunthorpe.
The lowdown: Last season's play-off finalists faded badly this time around, with Ronnie Moore fired in March after five winless games that included a 5-0 thrashing by Chesterfield. Ex-Brentford boss Andy Scott was his eventual replacement.
Mark out of 10: 6.5

Shrewsbury Town
Finished:
4th
Highlight: Reaching play-offs.
Lowlight: Losing in the semis to Torquay.
Star asset: Captain Ian Sharps was the player of the season.
The lowdown: The Shrews were pre-season promotion favourites but lacked an out-and-out goal-scorer and dropped too many points in January
Mark out of 10: 7

Southend United
Finished:
13th
Highlight: Moving to a point off the play-offs
Lowlight: A mediocre March that put paid to those promotion hopes.
Star asset: Bilel Mohsni has proved to be useful at both ends of the pitch.
The lowdown: Paul Sturrock's Shrimpers were a hastily-assembled team at the start of the season but quickly proved they were too good to go down but not quite strong enough to challenge for the play-offs, which is not bad considering the Scot inherited only four players.
Mark out of 10: 6

Stevenage
Finished:
6th
Highlight: Knocking Newcastle out of the FA Cup was good but winning the play-offs was even better.
Lowlight: There weren't any - apart from being accused of gamesmanship by Accrington, and others.
Star asset: Darius Charles, the left back turned striker.
The lowdown: Stevenage rid themselves of their Borough suffix to mark their Football League debut campaign and that ended gloriously thanks to John Mousinho's play-off final winner.
Mark out of 10: 9

Stockport County
Finished:
24th
Highlight: Beating Bury home and away.
Lowlight: Almost all the rest of it really...
Star asset: Greg Tansey netted 11 from midfield including a cracker at Northampton to delay the inevitable.
The lowdown: County's 106-year spell as a Football League club came to a sorry end just months out of coming out of administration (and being in League One) and Ray Mathias faces a tough ask bringing them back.
Mark out of 10: 0.5

Torquay United
Finished:
7th
Highlight: Reaching the play-off final.
Lowlight: Losing the play-off final - and probably manager Paul Buckle, to Bristol Rovers, as a result
Star asset: Jake Robinson has impressed this term
The lowdown: So near and yet so far for the team that clocks up more miles than most each season. Losing by the only goal at Old Trafford was a bitter blow, especially as Buckle confirmed afterwards it was probably time for him to move on.
Mark out of 10: 7

Wycombe Wanderers
Finished:
3rd
Highlight: Winning at Bury in the penultimate game to keep on course for automatic promotion.
Lowlight: Three straight losses in January.
Star asset: Top scorer Scott Rendell, who played on despite the death of his baby son and ended up with 19 goals.
The lowdown: Gary Waddock's side didn't look like contenders at the start but soon became just that and although they fell behind in five of their last ten games they did not lose any of them.
Mark out of 10: 8.5

FA Chairman David Bernstein Calls For Fifa Election to be Postponed

Sepp Blatter, Fifa, Zurich, May 30, 2011The FA has rarely been seen as a catalyst for change but it has belatedly taken the lead in challenging the balance of power at the head of the global game by calling for the postponement of the Fifa presidency election.

Twenty-fours hours before Sepp Blatter is due to be returned to the post unopposed, FA chairman David Bernstein has called for a delay to allow another candidate to stand on a platform of reform.

Blatter had originally been opposed by Mohamed Bin Hammam before the Qatari withdrew from the race after being suspended by the organisation pending an investigation into bribery allegations.

The FA had originally opted to abstain from the vote having decided the candidacy of both Blatter and Bin Hammam were tarnished by allegations of bribery and corruption relating to the bidding process for the right to host the World Cup finals in 2018 and 2022.

Further allegations of bribery that led to the suspension of Bin Hammam and Jack Warner, the Fifa vice-president, have created a deepening crisis within Fifa that shows no sign of easing, despite Blatter's insistence that the game is merely facing a "difficulty".

Isolated within the world game and with little to lose after the humiliating defeat in England's 2018 bid, Bernstein has spoken out.
In a statement on the FA website, www.thefa.com, Bernstein said: "Events of the last few days have reinforced our views, and we call on FIFA and ask other national associations to support us with two initiatives.

"First, to postpone the election and give credibility to this process, so any alternative reforming candidate could have the opportunity to stand for President.

"Secondly, to appoint a genuinely independent external party to make recommendations regarding improved governance and compliance procedures and structures throughout the FIFA decision making processes for consideration by the full membership."

There seems little chance of the election being postponed given it would take three-quarters of the 208 member associations to halt the process and, given Blatter will almost certainly be in charge for another four years, only a limited number will be willing to go public with their concerns.

The usual charge of sour grapes will be directed at the FA which has few friends in the world game and has, as a body, regularly been accused of being arrogant in its dealings with other nations and organisations.

In this instance, however, Bernstein should be applauded for speaking out.

Why Paul Scholes Remains Underappreciated at Home if Not Abroad

Paul ScholesThree months before Paul Scholes played his final Manchester United game against Barcelona, the former England international was described as the most complete midfielder of the past two decades by Xavi.

"In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen - the most complete - is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything," Xavi told The Daily Mail.

"He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn't give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more."

It is fair to say that Zinedine Zidane was also impressed, claiming that never having played alongside Scholes was one of the things he looks back on with disappointment.

"It's only natural to want to select your best players and there is no doubt for me that Paul Scholes is still in a class of his own," Zidane told The Sunday Mirror in 2010.

"He's almost untouchable in what he does. I never tire of watching him play. You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get.

"One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career."

Not bad for a little bloke from Oldham.

In fact, from winning the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award in 1993, the honours and compliments flowed non-stop for almost two decades.

He stands fourth on the club's list of all-time appearance makers, behind Ryan Giggs, Sir Bobby Charlton and Bill Foulkes, and few can claim to have served such a successful club so well for so long.

Scholes made his debut with two goals in a 2-1 League Cup win over Port Vale in 1994 - Sir Alex Ferguson was criticised for playing so many youngsters - and appeared in the league in United's next match, going on to make another 674 appearances for the club.

His impressive debut season - scoring five league goals as United just missed out on the Premier League and FA Cup - must have been a major factor in Ferguson's decision to let Paul Ince, Andrei Kanchelskis and Mark Hughes move on in the summer of 1995.

In recent years he has reinvented himself in a deeper role so it is easy for younger fans to struggle to remember the impish attacking midfielder who had the knack of timing runs into the area perfectly.

He had a wonderful range of passing, as comfortable sliding a five-yard pass through a gap as he was raking a 60-yarder across field and also possessed a great power and accuracy with his long-range shooting, although his tackling has always been lamentable and he was notoriously shy off the field.

He scored a total of 14 goals as United confounded the critics to win the Double in 1996, with kids David Beckham, Gary and Phil Neville and Nicky Butt starring, and it just went on and on.

Scholes made his England debut under Glenn Hoddle in 1997, after winning another title with United, and made his mark at the 1998 World Cup with a stunning goal in his country's 2-0 win over Tunisia.

There was also a memorable hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Poland at Wembley in 1999, shortly before carving his name into United folklore by playing a key role on the way to the 'Treble'.

He scored in the 1-1 quarter-final second leg draw at Inter and scored in the FA Cup win over Newcastle before missing the Champions League final win over Bayern Munich through suspension.

Scholes struggled with his form after Juan Sebastian Veron's arrival in 2001, being pushed forward to a second striker role, but bounced back the year after with 20 goals.

At the 2004 European Championships, he was also moved around to accommodate Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in central midfield and decided to call time on his international career after 66 caps and 14 goals.

Both Steve McClaren and Fabio Capello tried to tempt him back but he was having none of it and we can only wonder about how many caps he would have earned over the last seven years.

Scholes had a penalty saved as United lost the 2005 FA Cup final to Arsenal and also struggled with vision problems in 2006 but was still capable of coming up with sensational goals.

He remained a key man as United bounced back from four years without a title to win three on the bounce, gradually dropping deeper and deeper as his legs struggled to drag him up and down.
