The coverage, analysis and forecasting ahead of the MLS SuperDraft may increase with every passing year, but as Thursday's proceedings in Baltimore so-clearly illustrated, the event is as unpredictable as ever. While the experts debated whether University of Akron's Darlington Nagbe or Perry Kitchen would be the first overall pick, the Vancouver Whitecaps were heading in a completely different direction.
With the top selection, Vancouver chose striker Omar Salgado, a raw 17-year-old striker with enticing skills and physical tools who may not even be eligible until September. Nagbe and Kitchen may be considered can't-miss talents, but the Whitecaps had no qualms about passing them over in favor of an uncertain long-term project.
